Survey: Many local govts don't know asbestos statistics

Some local governments do not know how many people in their area have died of mesothelioma, a type of cancer believed linked to asbestos exposure, despite the central government advising them each year of the number of deaths in their area from the disease, according to results of the nationwide survey released Saturday by The Yomiuri Shimbun.

Asbestos blamed for deaths of 26 Japanese at Yokosuka

Twenty-six Japanese who worked at the U.S. naval base in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, died of asbestos-related diseases such as lung cancer and mesothelioma, according to a Yokohama organization supporting victims of work-related diseases.
